Jon Cooper has served in the county legislature for 10 years.  He was initially elected in 1999.  In 2009 he wasMore re-elected for a fifth-consecutive term as the majority leader of the Suffolk County Legislature.  

Legislator Cooper's proudest accomplishment is authoring the first county-wide law in the United States to ban the use of hand-held cell phones while driving.  His office distributes a free bumper sticker, which states, "Hang Up And Drive!!"  Visit the website for details.

Cooper was also a leader in the effort to ban the sale of the dietary supplement ephedra.  His work helped lead to a nationwide ban.

Legislator Cooper has worked tirelessly to help preserve Suffolk County's open spaces.  

The 18th legislative district covers Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, Huntington Village, Halesite, Huntington Bay, Centerport, Northport, Asharoken and Eaton's Neck.  The 18th district's southern border includes parts of Huntington Station, Greenlawn, East Northport and Commack.

Legislator Cooper and his spouse have five adopted children.
