Birchwood Souper Bowl A Success

Charity event helps provide food for the needy.

In the week leading up to the big game in Indiannapolis, the Birchwood Intermediate School sponsored its own ‘Souper’ Bowl by collecting soup cans to be donated to the Huntington Community Food Council. School officials said they were proud of students and the community for their support of the successful event. “They are always coming together to help the less fortunate in our community,”  said Birchwood Assistant Principal Steven Toto, in a district press release.

Chinese Exchange Students Arrive in Huntington

Group of 10 students to shadow Huntington High School hosts.

As Part of the Sister School Initiative, a group of high school students from China arrived in Huntington Saturday to participate in an exchange program. The 10 Chinese students will shadow 10 host students from Huntington High School during classes and participate in a comprehensive set of activities with their U.S. peers centered around specific themes, according to the school website. Some sightseeing is also planned. The group, from Tianjin No. 1 School, was introduced at the Huntington School Board meeting Monday. "Maybe we have stereotypes about China as they have about us, but this is breaking that down," said Joseph Leavy, chairperson of humanities for grades 7-12 in the Huntngton School District, who introduced the group at Jack …

School Board Honors Intel Finalist [VIDEO]

Juli Coraor, teacher recognized at Jack Abrams Intermediate School Monday.

  Huntington High School senior Juli Coraor and science teacher Lori Kenny were honored by the Huntington School Board Monday. At a regular meeting at Jack Abrams Intermediate School, Coraor, a national Intel Science Talent Search Contest finalist was recognized as the first Huntington student in 62 years to reach the final round of the prestigious competition. "It's no small feat," said School Superintendent Jim Polansky.  Polansky also recognized the efforts of science teacher Lori Kenny and the research program at the school which began as a fledgling program with nine students participating. Gillibrand Nominates Two Locals For Service Academies

Two Huntington-area seniors have been nominated by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to two of the nation's leading service institutions.  Nominees include Huntington's Brandon Fiordelisi, to the United States Naval Academy and Centerport's Robert Tirrito to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Those chosen were picked from a large group of qualified applicants, according to Gillibrand. Academic record, leadership potential and overall achievement were criteria used in the selection process. Final acceptance is determined solely by the service academies.   “I am honored to nominate these young, talented New Yorkers who exemplify these core values," said Gillibrand in a press release. One of Last Year's Best: What to Expect at Intel Finals

Second place winner reflects on experience of 2011 competition.

As Huntington High School senior Juli Coraor prepares for one of the biggest weeks of her life as an Intel Science Talent Search Contest finalist, one of last year's best provided a preview of what to expect. For Coraor, the final round takes place March 8-13 as she and 40 other finalists try for more than $630,000 in awards provided by the Intel Foundation. The top finisher receives a $100,000 scholarship. Michelle Hackman, the second place Intel winner from Long Island in 2011, said the finalists will experience a week in Washington, D.C., that they are never going to forget. SHBOE Looks to Stretch Dollars Before Budget Battle Begins

South Huntington school board discusses money-saving ideas, new technology.

With the budget overview set to be begin next month, the South Huntington school board spent its time Wednesday discussing how to cost-effectively improve the district. In a move which could save $300,000 in interest, the school board discussed a plan to take advantage of current low rates and refund some bonds from as early as 2000 still in effect. A bond from 2001 to aid the completion of portable classrooms and a bond from 2003 to help finance a new public library, are ongoing, with interest. Also at the meeting at the South Huntington District Administrative Building, Superintendent Thomas Shea said an energy performance contract is close to being completed but as new uni-vents were being installed, a problem arose with the plumbing. “…

Huntington Student Named Intel Finalist

Juli Coraor heading to Washington, D.C., in March to compete for top prize.

Huntington High School senior Juli Coraor has made it to the final group of the Intel Science Talent Search contest.  After receiving a call from Intel representatives Wednesday evening, Coraor said she was in disbelief. "I didn't believe that I was going to be a finalist at all, so it was a pretty big surprise for me," she said, on hearing the news. One of 40 remaining finalists, Coraor will head to Washington, D.C., March 8-13 to compete for more than $630,000 in awards provided by the Intel Foundation. The top winner receives a scholarship valued at $100,000. To prepare, Coraor said she plans on going over her paper to make sure she is able to explain it well and she plans on practicing with her teacher on presenting. She also must …

2 Whitman Seniors Named Suffolk Zone Award Winners

Kyle O'Rourke and Samantha Dell honored by the school.

Whitman seniors Kyle O'Rourke and Samantha Dell have been named Suffolk Zone award winners by the school for excellence on the playing field and in the classroom.  Suffolk Zone awards are given each year to seniors who maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during their junior year while contributing to an overall positive in the classroom and on the playing field, according to the school.  O'Rourke, a Wildcat wrestler, said he was surprised but happy when he heard the news. “This award is important to me, as it affirms all that I truly love here at Whitman,” said O'Rouke, according a press release from the South Huntington School District.  Dell, a soccer and lacrosse player, said she has enjoyed her time at Whitman and that her …
