Thief makes off with $400 in cash and credit cards from South Huntington store.
A man stole a purse from a South Huntington store last month after asking for a job at the location. Police say the suspect asked to use the restroom before stealing an employee's pocketbook containing credit cards and $400 in cash at the Lighting Gallery, located at 326 E. Jericho Turnpike at about 12:45 p.m. on Jan. 3. The thief was wearing a gray overcoat, dress pants, button up shirt, scarf and a ski cap while carrying a black duffel bag, according to police. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential, according to police.

County Police initiating “intelligence led policing" within local precincts.
The Suffolk County Police Department is taking a closer look at criminal trends within specific precinct areas, officials told Legis. Lou D’Amaro (D-Huntington Station) in his first meeting as a new member of the Suffolk Legislature’s Public Safety Committee. Specifically, D’Amaro questioned Acting Police Commissioner Edward Webber and newly promoted Chief of Department James Burke about the commanders’ focus on what they term “intelligence led policing” and its possible impacts on local police precincts. Intelligence led policing relies on a data driven deployment of resources whereby the department aggressively identifies crime trends and patterns on both a countywide and local level. Flees scene in Toyota with Hello Kitty seat covers, according to police.
Suffolk Police are searching for a man who stole a car engine from an auto repair shop in Huntington. According to police, a white male was observed on surveillance video Jan. 19 taking a Subaru car engine from Auto Tech, at 116 Spring Rd. in Huntington. The man loaded the engine into his vehicle, possibly a white Toyota Matrix with Hello Kitty seat covers, according to police, before fleeing the scene at about 10:30 p.m. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-220-TIPS. Central Islip A Mineola man was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison Friday on charges of trading child pornography over the internet. Michael Hopkins, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges in U.S. District Court in Central Islip and still faces charges of allegedly raping a 14-year-old Suffolk girl he met on the internet. While Hopkins allegedly did not coerce the girl to have sex with him, she is legally under the age of consent of 15. Hopkins has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors said that Hopkins had been trading the images online for the past 8 years. Two Hispanic men demand money at RIA check cashing Sunday; cashier refuses demands.
An attempted armed robbery occurred Sunday at the RIA check cashing store in Huntington Station. Police say the suspects, both Hispanic and one armed with a handgun, entered the store at 1357 New York Ave. and demanded cash. The teller, behind bullet proof glass, did not comply with the suspects who then fled south on New York Avenue, according to police. The two Hispanic men are described as being between five to five feet three inches tall, slim to medium builds, both in their 20's, according to police. Michael Fredericks, 26, dies after incident at Los Campos Deli on Depot Road.
A Huntingon Station man died after being shot in the head at a local deli Saturday. Michael Fredericks, 26, died at Huntington Hospital as a result of the shooting incident at the Los Campos Deli, located at 161 Depot Rd. in Huntington Station at about 10:18 p.m., according to police. Before police arrived at the scene, the victim was transported to the hosptital were he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, according to police. A house fire broke out Friday at 49 E. 14th St. in Huntington Station. Units from Huntington Manor, Huntington and Greelawn and Fire Departments responded to the at about 1 p.m. The cause of the blaze is unkown and under investigation, according to fire officials at the scene.

Anthony Cole, 22, arrested in Huntington Station Thursday.
A Huntington Station man was arrested Thursday after falsely reporting that he had been robbed of a backpack containing prescription medication. Police say, Anthony Cole, 22, of 289 Broadway, called 911 to report that he had been robbed by a man who fled the scene on a BMX bicycle on Union Avenue in Holbrook at 1 p.m. Cole fabricated the story to obtain a police report for the stolen medication, according to police. Cole was charged with third degree falsely reporting an incident and will be arraigned at a later date.
