Cash Mob at Value Drugs [VIDEO]

Huntington Chamber of Commerce sponsors first Cash Mob event in Huntington.

To help stimulate the local economy, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce staged its first "Cash Mob" in Huntington Thursday. In an effort to stimulate the local economy by promoting the COC's shop locally intitiative, word was spread to businesses and residents. They made their way to Value Drugs on New York Avenue this week for discounted merchandise, networking and refreshments. Turnout was heavy and the atmosphere was party-like for this soon-to-be monthly event.

Former Coach Kerry Moran Dies at 68

Longtime St. Anthony's and Whitman coach was staunch community activist in Northville.

Kerry Moran, a longtime teacher and cross-country coach at Whitman High School and St. Anthony’s, died Sept. 14. He was 68. The former coach and educator was critically injured in July of 2010 after being struck by a car near his home in Northville. Born in Quincy, Mass., on March 24, 1943, Moran grew up in Queens, graduating from Bishop Loughlin High School and St. John's University, where he met his wife, Bernadette. They were married in 1968. Moran began his career teaching English and coaching track in the Bronx before coming to Long Island, where he taught English and coached for many years at Walt Whitman High School and St. Anthony’s until retiring in 2004. Beloved Huntington Music Teacher Dies

Andrew Housholder, 78, remembered as a "truly extraordinary, yet ordinary man."

Andrew Edward Housholder, Huntington High School’s choral director from 1965 to 1988 whose passion for music helped shape the lives of generations of students, died Sept. 8 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He was 78. “When I am asked about teachers that shaped my life; only a handful come to mind, but Andy is always at the top of the list,” wrote former Huntington student Hillary Hess in an online tribute on The Dunn Funeral Home website. “The epitome of teachers, a passionate musician, loving father and husband, mentor, good friend, a deeply spiritual and kind man.” Robert Freedman added, “I was a member of the Huntington Choral Society board that brought Andy to be our director. Nora Bredes, Former County Legislator and Activist, Dies at 60

Bredes led the charge against the Shoreham nuclear power plant.

Former Suffolk County Legislator Nora Bredes, who was one of the most outspoken voices against the Shoreham nuclear power plant in the 1980s, died Thursday at the age of 60 after losing her battle with breast cancer. Bredes held the Fifth Legislative District seat from 1992 to 1998, during which time she fought for anti-tobacco legislation, open space preservation, and better protection for victims of domestic violence. One year after she left the legislature, she became the director of the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women’s Leadership at the University of Rochester. "Her research on women in politics had an impact on the democratic process at the state, regional, and national levels," Rochester President Joel Seligman said in a statement…

John T. Hoops, World War II Hero, Passes Away at 89

Participated in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and Pacific Theatre.

John T. Hoops, a one-time chief yeoman in the U.S. Navy and flag writer for the late Fleet Adm. William F. (Bull) Halsey, died on Christmas day. The East Northport resident was 89. Born in Brooklyn on Feb. 23, 1921, the son of John H. and Catherine Hoops of Glendale, New York, Hoops graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in June 1940. He enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 2, 1940. Hoops, a "Plank Owner" (part of the commissioning crew) of the destroyer USS Walke (DD-723), participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, on June 6, 1944, bombarding German blockhouses in Cherbourg, France. Afterwards the ship transited via the Panama Canal to the Western Pacific and the Philippine Sea where he participated in the re-taking of the Philippine …

Michael Mangino, 67, St. Anthony's Football Coach, Dies

Deer Park resident spent 35 years at Nassau Health Department and 21 as Friars assistant football coach.

Michael Mangino, a longtime assistant football coach and former teacher at St. Anthony's High School, died suddenly Friday while visiting family in Naples, Fla. He was 67. Mangino, of Deer Park, worked at the Nassau County Health Department for 35 years. But sports was always a passion. You could find him on a golf course or football field most of the year. He started coaching football at St. Anthony's with the freshman team in 1990. He also once served as head freshman boys lacrosse coach.
