Man Asks For Job, Steals Purse

Thief makes off with $400 in cash and credit cards from South Huntington store.

A man stole a purse from a South Huntington store last month after asking for a job at the location. Police say the suspect asked to use the restroom before stealing an employee's pocketbook containing credit cards and $400 in cash at the Lighting Gallery, located at 326 E. Jericho Turnpike at about 12:45 p.m. on Jan. 3. The thief was wearing a gray overcoat, dress pants, button up shirt, scarf and a ski cap while carrying a black duffel bag, according to police.  Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call 1-800-220-TIPS.  All calls will be kept confidential, according to police.

Suffolk Police Focusing on Crime Trends

County Police initiating “intelligence led policing" within local precincts.

The Suffolk County Police Department is taking a closer look at criminal trends within specific precinct areas, officials told Legis. Lou D’Amaro (D-Huntington Station) in his first meeting as a new member of the Suffolk Legislature’s Public Safety Committee. Specifically, D’Amaro questioned Acting Police Commissioner Edward Webber and newly promoted Chief of Department James Burke about the commanders’ focus on what they term “intelligence led policing” and its possible impacts on local police precincts.    Intelligence led policing relies on a data driven deployment of resources whereby the department aggressively identifies crime trends and patterns on both a countywide and local level.  Police officials analyze the data and then …

Israel's Earmark Spending Questioned

An investigative report shows the Dix Hills representative is one of 33 members of Congress to fund projects that have the potential to improve their own properties.

An investigation by The Washington Post uncovered that about 33 members of Congress, including Rep. Steve Israel, D-Dix Hills, helped direct millions of dollars in earmarks to public projects that had the potential to enhance the surroundings of the lawmaker’s own property. The research showed that in 2008, Israel earmarked $490,000 to study Commack Road, bordering Dix Hills, with the goal of easing traffic along busy bypass. The Post points out that the Congressman's home (in red on the map) is within two miles of the roadway. According to the Post, the project has stalled and the money is yet to be spent.  The study is regarding a freight-rail-truck Intermodal facility proposed by the New York State Department of Transportation. Petrone to Undergo Back Surgery

Supervisor seen in noticeable discomfort earlier in the week.

Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone is scheduled to undergo back surgery this month. At a Town Board meeting Monday and a press conference Tuesday at Town Hall the supervisor could be seen moving around somewhat gingerly because of lingering back pain. A statement from the Town of Huntington regarding the specifics of the surgical procedure will come following the operation, according to A.J. Carter, the town's communication director. At Monday's Town Board meeting, Huntington Town Councilman Mark Mayoka wished Petrone well regarding the upcoming medical procedure.

Man Steals Car Engine From Auto Tech

Flees scene in Toyota with Hello Kitty seat covers, according to police.

Suffolk Police are searching for a man who stole a car engine from an auto repair shop in Huntington.   According to police, a white male was observed on surveillance video Jan. 19 taking a Subaru car engine from Auto Tech, at 116 Spring Rd. in Huntington. The man loaded the engine into his vehicle, possibly a white Toyota Matrix with Hello Kitty seat covers, according to police, before fleeing the scene at about 10:30 p.m. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-220-TIPS.  All calls will be kept confidential, according to police.
