- Berland is past vice president and member of the board of directors of House Beautiful at Dix Hills, and a member of the board of directors and past president of Huntington Recreation Association (HRA).
- She is a member of the board of directors for the Suffolk branch of International Dyslexia Association; member of the Advisory Board for Friends of Karen, former president; treasurer and current board member of the HRA.
- She has served as New York State assistant attorney general for six years in which she represented the people of the state in a variety of litigations.
- She was also assistant town attorney for the town of Huntington.
- Berland is a graduate of Hofstra University School of Law and State University of New York at Albany.
