Weekend Picks: Fairs, Festivals, Talent and More

Here's a roundup of fun activities in the region that the entire family can enjoy.

The Nassau County Strawberry Festival runs through Sunday at the Bellmore Boces School grounds at Newbridge Rd and Jerusalem Ave., Exit 25 south off the Southern State Parkway. Enjoy rides, live bands and performances. Look for strawberry products on sale, including strawberry shortcake, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate covered strawberries, and strawberry daiquiris. Some of Long Island’s most gifted teens are performing in the Huntington Arts Council “Got Talent? Long Island,” a competition for performers 18 years and under. The event takes place Saturday at 7:30pm at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College in Dix Hills. The grand prize winner gets a $1,000 cash award and paid performance at the 49th Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival. Tickets purchased by 5 p.m. Friday are $35 VIP, $25 General Seating, $20 seniors, students and HAC members, $10 children under 12 years. Tickets at the door are $30 for general seating, $15 for children 21 and under.

Also in Huntington, the Lynch Ballet Company presents Sleeping Beauty at the Huntington High School Auditorium at 188 Oakwood Road. Performances are are Saturday at 6 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets: Adults $25 Children $20. Learn more.

HarborFest takes place Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Town Dock in Port Washington. It’s the 24th year for the festival, which features fun for the entire family, and typically draws as many as 12,000 people. This year’s HarborFest includes a handmade craft fair, art in the park, food court, musical entertainment, bay cruises, family fun stage, environmental section, children’s fun park, model boat regatta and a nautical museum exhibit.

Also on Sunday in Port Washington, a bee-whispering workshop from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Sands Point Preserve. Learn all about honey bee biology and beekeeping. Admission is $10 per car or free with an annual pass. Honey is also available for purchase.

It’s the final weekend for the Brookhaven Fair. Enjoy the carnival activities, food, games, and live entertainment and shows including Flying’s Circus, Lance Gifford’s Magic & Illusion Show, Monkeys Riding Dogs, a full petting zoo and more. The fair is open Friday 5-11 p.m. Saturday 12-11 p.m.; Sunday 12-11 p.m. The fair takes place at Brookhaven Amphitheater at Bald Hill, 55 Bicycle Path in Farmingville. See website for details.
