Preparing for Blizzard in Huntington

A light blanket of snow covered Northport Thursday morning, a small indication of what is to come later on Thursday night.

The National Weather Service predicts that Long Island will see between 8 and 10 inches of snow, starting Thursday night, and has issued a blizzard warning for 6 p.m. in the area.

Temperatures are expected to drop Thursday night into the mid-teens, and stay below freezing into Sunday.

Schools are already closed for holiday break.

If residents learned anything from last year's February blizzard, which crippled most of Long Island, it's to be prepared. Here is a short list of some local stores where you can find shovels, batteries, rock salt or other weather-related items. Many other stores, such as supermarkets, have supplies, as well.
