Nearly 100 Signed Up For Cemetery Stewards Program

Newly-established group to help maintain 56 historic sites.

More than 50 participants attended the orientation of the newly-established cemetery stewards program at Huntington Village’s Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building Saturday, according to a town press release.

Established by Town Board member Susan Berland, the program requires that registered stewards complete an evaluation on the condition of their chosen cemetery four times annually. There are currently 96 registered stewards participating with the program.

“The Town of Huntington is committed to the continued preservation and maintenance of its 56 historic cemeteries”, said Berland. “We are proud to have so many of these treasured properties and the response to the cemetery steward program has been overwhelming.  I encourage anyone interested in becoming a cemetery steward to visit the town website and register today.”

Also at the event, Town Historian Robert Hughes shared some local history with attendees.
