Kickball Fundraiser to Honor Huntington HS Alum

Tournament will be held Saturday to raise funds for scholarship in memory of Billy Oliva.

The second of two alumni kickball tournaments will be held at Huntington High School on Saturday afternoon to help raise funds for "Let It Begin With Me – William F. Oliva Memorial Scholarship." The scholarship was created in February by the Class of 1984 alunmi to honor their classmate Billy Oliva, who was killed in a work-related accident on Oct. 14, 2004.

Acording to Rose Pelle Kitzmiller, the organizer of the scholarship and Saturday's festivities, each tournament serves to both raise money for a newly-created scholarship for Huntington High School seniors, and to honor the memory of the Class of 1984 alum.

"The scholarship guarentees at least one or more college-bound Huntington High School students a partial scholarship to help further their education," Kitzmiller said. The first tournament was held in April and raised $7,000, which then went towards scholarships for two members of the outgoing Class of 2010.

Saturday's events begin at 2 p.m. at the high school's softball field. Participation costs $20, with all the proceeds going to the scholarship for the Class of 2011, and Kitzmiller said spectators are encourage to donate as well.

After the kickball game, a "Celebration of Life" will take place at Finley's of Greene Street, where attendees and kickball participants are invited to celebrate and share their memories of Oliva. At 9 p.m., a special concert will take place at Nag's Head Ale House, featuring local Huntington artists and Huntington High School alumni.
