Historical Society Heritage Antique Show This Weekend

Explore the wares of more than 35 dealers from across the country on Saturday and Sunday.

The Huntington Historical Society (HHS) will host its annual Heritage Antique Show this weekend. The annual event runs from 10 am to 5 pm today and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday.

As in the past, HHS Executive Coordinator Toby Kissam, a descendent of the historic Kissam family, will be displaying an intriguing potpourri of 19th century furniture, decorative accessories, and Long Island maps.

"They are always popular," Kissam said of the maps, explaining that they are decorative and can provide prospective and insight into both local and family history.

The assortment of antique wares from across the country will include folk art, vintage jewelry, prints, pottery, and 18th and 19th century furniture, which will be displayed to full advantage in room-like vignettes, Kissam indicated.

Northport dealer David Nelz's booth will feature a wide range of Americana.

Old advertising signs have become hot decorative collectibles, Nelz noted, and he'll have some real goodies with him, including a metal "Wonder Bread" sign dating from the early 1950s that once graced the exterior of a store.

The sign, which says "Helps build strong bodies eight ways," is an intriguing piece of memorabilia because in 1955, the company changed their tag line to include "twelve ways," Nelz explained.

Known for its eye-catching primary color Wonder Bread logo, Continental Baking began to enrich its product with essential vitamins and minerals  to offset the bleaching process which stripped nutrients from wheat.

"The first tag line was only in effect for a few years," Nelz said.

Also of interest to "country-look" connoisseurs will be a broom display stand sporting Gold Medal Flour advertising.

The stand, which dates from the 19th century, was used in a store, and hails from the Hudson Valley, Nelz said.

Nelz will also be displaying a pair of red and white carousel benches boasting fancy woodwork that dates from early 20th century Pennsylvania. Such benches were used by parents and grandparents who wanted to ride the carousel with young children, but didn't want to stand, Nelz indicated.

Guests will also get an eyeful at the booth of Katherine Stevens, who has been show participant for more than 20 years.

She'll be bringing furniture, porcelain, glass, sterling silver, art, and posters, she said.

As in the past, the historical society will have its own booth at which it will be selling items donated over the course of the year. Of particular interest will be a circa 1840 tall-post bed with a Virginia provenance, and a pair of late 19th century chairs, Kissam said, adding that there will also be an English signed oil on canvas.

"It's a pastoral scene," Kissam said.

HHS owns and operates four nationally registered properties and proceeds from the event supports them and the society's collections. The event also benefits the many educational programs and exhibits that enrich the public's appreciation of our past.

The $7 admission fee is discounted with a coupon available for printing at www.huntingtonhistoricalsociety.org. Admission is $6 for Society members and their guests.

Huntington High School, which has long been the venue for this popular antique show, is located at the intersection of Oakwood and McKay Roads. For more information and directions, call the HHS at (631) 427-7045 ext. 401.
