Suffolk Opens Cooling Centers

Suffolk County has opened the following cooling centers for those seeking to cool down during the hours of the forecasted Heat Advisory. 

Each cooling center will have a representative from Office of Emergency Management, Suffolk County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the American Red Cross. The following cooling centers will be opened Tuesday until 8 p.m. They will re-open on Wednesday from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. 

SCCC – Brentwood Campus – Captree Commons, Crooked Hill Road, Brentwood, NY 
SCCC – Ammerman Campus – Babylon Student Center, 533 College Road, Selden, NY 
SCCC – Riverhead – Peconic Building, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, Riverhead, NY 

Avoid heat stress during our recent and projected high temperature days by following these tips: 

• Avoid strenuous activity;
• Drink plenty of cool liquids such as water, fruit and vegetable juices, and caffeine free iced tea. Avoid alcoholic beverages and caffeine;
• Keep rooms well ventilated with air-conditioners and fans;
• Stay out of direct sunlight, both indoors and outdoors basements are a good location they have minimum sunlight and are usually much cooler then the open parts of a house;
• Wear lightweight, light colored, loose fitting clothing;
• Get to know your neighbors, especially the elderly, the very young and those with preexisting medical conditions or special needs. Check on them during the heat wave and call for help when necessary. This small yet crucial gesture can help ensure we all have a safe and healthy summer.

In the Town of Huntington, cool off at area beaches with extended lifeguard hours until 7:30 p.m. throughout the week and at the following locations:

The Dix Hills pool is open until 8 p.m.

Public skating sessions are held at the Dix Hills Ice Rink from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; from 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday; from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday (adults only); and from 8:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Friday.

The Senior Beach House at Centerport Beach is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Village Green Senior Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
