Whitman Softball Shut Out by Bay Shore

The 6-0 loss pushes the Wildcats to 8-7 on the season.

The Whitman softball team was unable to scratch out any runs against Bay Shore's Taylor McGowan on Monday, losing to the defending state champion Marauders, 6-0, in a Suffolk League II game.

Heroes: McGowan held the Wildcats to just three hits in registering her fourth consecutive shutout and second shutout over Whitman on the season. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Whitman's Jen Schaber pitched a complete game for the Wildcats (8-6), giving up six runs and 14 hits while walking three amd striking out one. She allowed several runners to reach in each inning, stranding twelve overall on the day.

At the plate for Bay Shore (14-0 overall, 13-0 League II), right fielder Breyonne Coan went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in., while center fielder Marissa Brightman contributed 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Shortstop Amber Fogarty had three hits and scored two runs, while McGowan contributed two hits, scored two runs, and drove in a run.

Schaber, shortstop Maria Pezzino, and third baseman Jackie Wirtz had the three hits for Whitman.

Turning Point: Schaber fell into trouble immediately after Bay Shore third baseman Giana Panariello grounded out leading off the game. Fogarty followed with a bunt single, which was followed by a single to center by McGowan. Schaber walked the next batter, catcher Courtney Syrett, and Coan followed with a bases-clearing double on a 1-1 pitch. The Wildcats never recovered.

Bay Shore tacked on runs in the fourth (on McGowan's sac fly, scoring Fogarty from second) and in the sixth (on a two-run double by Brightman).

Quotable: Whitman coach David Rivera felt that Schaber wasn't attacking the Bay Shore hitters aggressively enough today.

"We lost this game in the circle today," he said. "When you don't throw strike one, you can't win. Bottom line. It starts there, and it helps us stay in the game. Once the game's not close, from that point on, you have no shot."

Key Stat: McGowan's shutout was her sixth overall on the season. She's allowed only ten runs all year.

Upcoming: The Wildcats, at 8-7, are still in good shape. They have four games remaining on the schedule, and they've already defeated their next three opponents (at Lindenhurst, vs Sachem North, at Northport) already this season.

"We're going to end up making the playoffs if we just play our game," said coach Rivera. "We've been playing better as a team, minus today. I expect us to win at least two [of our remaining] games and get into the playoffs."
