Whitman Football Beats Centereach, 41-19

No. 9 seeded Wildcats beat Centereach 41-19 in home opener Saturday.

Two football programs were trying to take a step forward on the playing field Saturday — but in the end, it was making the bigger strides.

Scoring on each of its first three possessions, the Wildcats were up 34-6 on Centereach by halftime.

“We’ve come along way since last year,” said Whitman Coach Robin Rosa. “We’re bigger, stronger and faster.”

The newly installed triple option was clicking Saturday with Whitman running back Darrell Felder and the rest of the offense having a big day.

Whitman QB Mitchell Bermudez ran a smooth game mixing up the hard running of Felder, the speed of runing back Berthin Lindor and pass catching ability of Timothy Laster who scored a touchdown on a 19 yard pass from Bermudez and again scored on a 90 yard kick off return.

Wildcat team captains; Felder, Laster and offensive lineman Kieran Elmore showed solid leadership in leading the junior-heavy team to their first win of the season 41-19.

Whitman is ranked No. 9 in Suffolk County Division II.

“We have to prove ourselves this year,” said coach Rosa. “We are in a tough division and while this win was important, we have a lot of work to do to get ready for next week.”

Whitman will be at Hills West on Sept. 17 beginning at 1:30 p.m. before facing the defending Suffolk County champions on Sept. 24 in the homecoming game at 4 p.m.
