Whitman Football 2013 Schedule

Wildcats draw tough schedule despite No. 7 seed, hope to add to string of playoff appearances.

It’s been a remarkable two seasons for Whitman football.

The 2011 team won four games and qualified for the Suffolk playoffs for the first time in 23 years. Last year’s squad (4-5) proved it was no fluke.

Which direction Whitman goes in 2013 is still open for debate, even for its coach.

Fourth-year Coach Robin Rosa is proud of the strides the Wildcats have made. But even he admits replacing the 26 seniors who graduated will be the program’s greatest challenge.

Fall practice begins Aug. 19 but Rosa’s off-season lifting program already has 70 players in the weight room. That and a JV that’s gone 15-1 over the last two seasons offer reason for hope.

Now for a dose of reality. The fall schedule is out and the Wildcats, the No. 7 seed in Division II, open on the road Sept. 12 against top-seeded East Islip.

Whitman senior OLB / FB Berthin Lindor will be a focal point and a talented pair of young halfbacks return in the option attack.

“I think skill position-wise I’ll be OK,” Rosa said.

Whitman fell to eventual Suffolk champ Riverhead, 36-13, in the quarterfinals a year ago. The Wildcats play at Riverhead Oct. 19.
