Special Olympics Coming to Huntington

High school will host athletes in April competition.

The Special Olympics are coming to Huntington.

Kristina Aquilone, development specialist for the Special Olympics regional office, said the athletes will compete at on April 10.

Georgia D. McCarthy, Huntington's district director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics met recently with representatives of the Special Olympics' Long Island region and said she is "confident that this event will be an extraordinary opportunity for our school district and community."

This will be the organization's 40th annual spring games competition.

"Our high school students will have the chance to volunteer for these games on various committees," McCarthy said. "We have many staff members who are interested in working together to provide a wonderful experience for these athletes."

A school district spokesman said that last spring, Huntington students Charytin Ortiz, Liam Mrotzek, John Cronin, Nicholas Smyth, and John Manaker won several medals in events hosted by Cold Spring Harbor High School.

"I am really excited about this opportunity," McCarthy said. "It's an amazing event."
