If you are expecting a high scoring shootout in Wednesday's Nassau County Class "C" Championship, you will be in for a rude awakening. That is if Dennis Bonn's Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks have anything to say about it.
Bonn's Seahawks (15-1), who won their first playoff game 7-4 over Friends Academy, will take on the Indians of Manhasett High School Wednesday with a chance to head to the Long Island Championship. The two teams faced off in early May with the Indians taking the contest 7-2 behind two goals a piece from Matt Tompkins and Pat Moroney as well as a 14 save performance from junior goalie Frank Morelli.
"He's a very good goalie," senior Christian Kennedy said about Morelli, who took over as the starting goalie April 24 after an injury to starter Chris Boukas. "We have to take smart shots and we cant let him make easy saves."
"We didn't have enough of a game play in that first match up" Bonn said of the loss to the Indians on May 8. "This time around we will put together different looks both on offense and defense."
The Indians are coming off a 19-3 victory of Seaford High School in which 10 different Indians scored a goal. Its no secret, the Indians have many different options on offense. In last weeks win, Chris Cook netted three goals and three assists and Drew Belinksy added three goals and two assists on the day.
"We know we have to play good team defense," Kennedy said. "We must slow down their transition game and possess the ball while we are on offense."
The Seahawks will look to slow down the pace of the game, similar to what Notre Dame was able to accomplish in Monday's NCAA National Championship game against the Duke Blue Devils, despite a 6-5 loss.
"It wont be one of the most exciting games," said senior captain Brendan Bouchard. "We will try to slow the ball down as much as possible."
When all is said and done, Bonn knows his team will be the underdog. He understands they are not expected to win and to him, it takes a lot of the pressure off of his team.
"We just have to go out and play. Hopefully we play a complete four quarter game. There really isn't much pressure since we aren't expected to win but I do expect we just go out and play our best."
Said Kennedy of a win against their rivals in the County Championship: "Its something we have all looked forward to from a young age. A win would mean the world to me, our team and our CSH [Cold Spring Harbor] lacrosse community."
