MLB Star Shares Good Sportsmanship Tips with Kids

Patch sat down with Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira to learn how he keeps it classy on the field, win or lose.

When life throws you a curve ball, Major League Baseball (MLB) star Mark Teixeira says it's important to be a good sport.

Here’s how the first-baseman keeps it classy on the field:

Q. Why is good sportsmanship important?

A. Good sportsmanship is important because baseball is not just about winning and losing. When you win, do it with class and don't make fun of the other team. When you lose, don't pout and make excuses. You should have fun playing, and being a good sport is a big part of that.

Q. How do you make sure you always exhibit good sportsmanship?

A. I think about how lucky I am to be playing Major League Baseball. It's easy for me to be a good sport because I get to play baseball for a living. There are lots of young players that watch me, and I want to be a positive influence on those kids.

Q. What’s a good way to learn good sportsmanship?

A. Good sportsmanship is learned through the wins and losses of a season. After you win, make an effort to tell the opposing players that they played a great game and tell them good luck next time. When you lose, congratulate the opposing team and tell your teammates that we will try harder next game. Only through playing the game the right way will you learn good sportsmanship.

Kids will usually follow the lead of their parents and coaches. I've coached my kids for years in different sports. The problem is parents and coaches take it too seriously.... It's a game for kids to have fun. When parents and coaches yell at refs and umpires, or say bad things about the opposing team, kids see that and they will think its ok. In turn, the kids will have bad attitudes too. Some of these parents and coaches should stay home and let the kids play the game, because most of the time they just embarrass themselves, their kids and the entire team in front of the whole community.

We would love to have Mark Teixeira come to Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club and deliver this very important message directly to our kids in our community. He is an outstanding role model that many of our youth look up to...what a great way to spread the message of sportsmanship by connecting directly with the kids!

I agree with Johnny. When my daughter was playing club and high school volleyball I focused too much on her won-loss record and a college scholoarship because that is where the recognition is. I admit it and would have emphasized different aspects of the game if I had it to do all over again. As it turned out she got the scholarship but dropped out in a year and a half.

Character and sportsmanship is directly related. Teach the kids to have a positive approach to winning and losing so their memories instill the better virtues of society. JW

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something

Usually cats stay within a few houses of home Sometimes they just hunker down under a neighbor'sRead More shed or deck. He is more likely to come to you at night when there aren't as many lawn mower sounds. Walk around with a can of the stinkiest cat food that you can find. Call to him, and listen for a response. He may answer you with soft meows. Make a trail of stinky cat food to your door and leave the can at the door overnight. Hang up signs with a photo in the neighborhood. Go door to door and tell neighbors to call you if they see him. Kids playing, and dog walkers might spot him. Once you have an idea, of where he is, you can use a have a heart trap to catch him, if he won't come to you. Some cats get so scared when they get out, that they don't recognize their humans. We have had cats disappear for months, before trapping them.

We've checked with authorities on this and they say there were no major injuries. While we try toRead More get to every serious accident, we're not going to be able to cover everything that happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
