Huntington Field Hockey Defeats Whitman in Overtime

Huntington topped Whitman on overtime penalty strokes at Huntington High School on Monday.

The Huntington Blue Devils (7-8) defeated the Whitman Wildcats (4-10) on overtime penalty strokes in a field hockey game at Huntington High School on Monday afternoon. The game went into penalty stroke overtime tied 1 after neither team scored in the first 10-minute overtime. The Blue Devils outscored the Wildcats 3-1 on penalty strokes to take home the victory.

The Hero: After playing a solid game in regulation, limiting the Wildcats to only one goal, Huntington goalie Katherine Shirley came through in the penalty shootout, making 4 out of 5 saves to clinch the victory.

Kianna Freitag scored Huntington's lone goal in regulation on an unassisted strike with 18 minutes left in the first half.

Hailey Danzig scored Whitman's only goal in regulation as she took a deflection off of Huntington's goalie and put it into the net. Her effort came at the expense of bodily harm when she took a hard fall against the net upon scoring. After a few minutes, she got up to the ovation of the crowd and returned to the game after a short rest on the bench.

The Turning Point: The game went as far as it could go and the Blue Devils took advantage of the penalty stroke tiebreaker by scoring three goals to Whitman's one.  Colleen Wright, Samantha Palmer, and Jillian Kocis came through on penalty strokes to put the game away for Huntington.

Quotable: "We played a good game today, but we play at the level of our opponent," said Huntington head coach Jillian Seher. "So, we play Smithtown East on Wednesday and hopefully we can step up and play hard against them."

The Bottom Line: While Whitman is eliminated from playoff contention, Huntington sits in seventh behind Harborfields for the sixth and final playoff spot.  If they can pull off a convincing upset over a tough Smithtown East team (11-4), then they may have a shot at qualifying. Whitman will be trying to help Huntington's chances as they take on Harborfields.

Who's Next?: Huntington's final regular season game at Smithtown East will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Whitman's game against Harborfields will be at home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
