Girls Lacrosse Finishes Season with Home Loss

Blue Devils were shut down by Shoreham-Wading River 19 to 9.

In what proved to be an ending short of "story book," the girls lacrosse team wrapped up their 2010 season with a tough loss against first place Shoreham Wading River, 19–9.

The Blue Devils, who will miss the playoffs, were lead by Michaela Brown, who had 4 goals, and by Sarah Ehrman, who had 2 goals.

In an up-and -own game, Shoreham-Wading River raced out to a 6–3 lead by the midway point of the first half. But after a warm tribute to Huntington's seniors at halftime, goals by Brown and Emma Hayes Hurley brought the score to 6–5 in the early stages of the second half. Then three Huntington goals within one minute of play took the Blue Devils into the lead, 8–7, with 18:24 left in the game. The last goal in the flurry, scored once again by Michaela Brown, would turn out to be Huntington's last. The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats would go on to score the next 12 goals in the game, to bring the final score to 19–8.

If not for the stellar goalkeeping of backup Sam Mohr, the score could been much worse. "Sam really stepped up," said Coach Nancy Wilson.

What happened to the team in the 2nd half? "We didn't execute well on the draw, we didn't run through the ground balls, and we struggled with re-defending out of our own attack zone."

According to coach, injuries to starting goalie Karly Kocis and Angela Bosco have hurt the team's play the last few games. In fact, many of the starters in today's game were playing with injuries, admitted Wilson. As a result, Huntington has lost its last five games, and will not qualify this year for Division II playoffs.

As for the Shoreham Wading River squad, they were led by Kait Brosco, who had 6 goals.

"I am feeling a lot of love from my seniors. I have a talented group of girls, and they're hurting right now," Coach Wilson said after the game.

"We have to look towards the future. It will be a time of total rebuilding, as we're losing 8 seniors this year."
