Football: Week 3 Preview
Homecoming weekend for Whitman and home opener for Huntington highlight Week 3.
Huntington opens its home schedule after a challenging two weeks on the road while Whitman couldn't face a tougher foe for homecoming weekend. Meanwhile, St. Anthony's plays the first of four straight on the road. Welcome to a critical Week 3 of high school football:
Miller Place @ Huntington (Saturday, 1:30 p.m.): Don’t overlook Miller Place in what has turned out to be an unpredictable first two weeks in Division III. Miller Place (1-1) hung with defending Suffolk champ Sayville for three quarters and then soundly beat Harborfields last week. Senior quarterback Matt Hinchy is the key. (1-1) bounced back last week, led by two big touchdown catches by Trayvon Toney. Blue Devils QB Dan Plant has three TD passes of more than 50 yards. Bottom line: Whichever team comes out on top will owe a big part of its success to the play of a veteran QB.
East Islip @ Whitman (Saturday, 4 p.m.): It’s homecoming for the Wildcats. Will it be a happy one? Traditional power East Islip (0-2) enters the game winless. But don’t be fooled. The Redmen lost to two of the best teams in Division II by nine combined points – the latter a 16-10 defeat to West Babylon in OT. East Islip, the preseason top seed, has a developing threat in quarterback Peter Hanabergh. (1-1) couldn’t stop Half Hollow Hills West and one of the state’s best players in . The Wildcats will need to hold the ball and give Darrell Felder room to run if they want to make this a happy homecoming. There is good news: Rain is the great equalizer.

Athletic Director Don Buckley called the injury a bone bruise and expects Riley to play against Fordham. More good news: The running game didn’t miss a beat. Brian Sherlock and Anthony Anderson impressed. Meanwhile, Fordham Prep (2-0) is coming off an impressive 27-6 win over CHSFL rival Holy Trinity. Look out for two-way playmaker Logan Williamson, who accounted for three TDs and forced a fumble. The game is at Fordham University. St. Anthony’s , in the AAA semis a year ago.
