Football: Week 1 Preview

Whitman gears up at home while Huntington gets an early road test.

It’s a new football season. Week 1 is all about energy and excitement. Let’s see who brings it.

Huntington @ Westhampton (Friday, 6:30 p.m.): It’s an early road test for the No. 3 seeded Blue Devils. , a playoff team a year ago in Suffolk Division III at 7-3, can’t – and won’t have to – rely solely on star back Trayvon Toney. But when you’re facing the No. 5 seeded Westhampton Hurricanes, star power can’t hurt. Both teams lost in the semifinals a year ago. Both harbor dreams of advancing at least one game deeper into the postseason in 2011. It begins here.

Centereach @ Whitman (Saturday, 2 p.m.): It’s year two under coach Robin Rosa but a fresh start in Suffolk’s Division II after an enrollment drop moved the Wildcats down from D-I. The No. 9 seeded Wildcats have a legitimate running threat in Darrell Felder. And Centereach, 2-6 a year ago, couldn’t stop anyone on defense. So it’s an opportune moment for Whitman to get on track.

State College @ St. Anthony’s (Cancelled): This game was supposed to be a Friday night made-for-TV special and then rescheduled to Sunday. But flood conditions in Pennsylvania made it imprudent for State College to travel. So the game has been cancelled. Good thing. The , who beat State College on the road last year, are at a disadvantage for two reasons. One: Coach Rich Reichert must start No. 3 quarterback Greg Galligan because of injuries to the two signal callers ahead of him. Two: State College (0-1) already has a game under its belt (a loss to North Allegheny, last year’s state champ ).
