St. Anthony's Goes Solar

South Huntington parochial school turns to solar energy with installation of 100 kilowatt array.

St. Anthony’s High School is turning to a higher power – solar power.

The South Huntington parochial school has begun the installation of a 100 kilowatt array by Roslyn Heights-based Green Logic. St. Anthony’s Principal Bro. Gary Cregan sees this as a long-term investment that will help hold the line on tuition.

"This program is definitely an answer to St. Francis' call to embrace and protect all of God's creation,” Cregan said. “In the practical sense, the administration and the board of St. Anthony's High School is attempting to find ways that we might allow all income families – who value a Roman Catholic education – to afford one."

The school’s goal is to get up to 35 percent of its energy needs through solar. St. Anthony’s expects to install another 100kw array next summer, a total investment estimated at $200,000.

The school tapped into a not-for-profit LIPA rebate program and has also switched from conventional to high efficiency fluorescent and LED lighting, which will bring the school's electric bill down approximately $7,000 per month.
