Sperrazza Named Teacher of the Year in South Huntington

Six other teachers recognized as best in the district Wednesday at Whitman High School.

Whitman English teacher Barbara Sperrazza was named Teacher of the Year for her unyielding attention to students' academic growth, self-esteem and her commitment to helping others to follow their dreams.

At a ceremony Wednesday at Whitman High School, Sperrazza, a 32-year educator in South Huntington and New York City, congratulated other award-winning teachers while thanking family, former educators, friends, parents, students and colleagues. 

The 10-year Whitman educator, who will retire this year, gave much credit for her success to her mother, a homemaker and her father, a former teacher.

"Tonight I am rewarded for all of their hard work," said Sperrazza. "Even more, I am told that I am the best simply by having the good fortune to follow in my father's footsteps by spending these last 32 years in the best profession in the world. I believe the word lucky says it all." 

Sperrazza, also named Teacher of the Year at Whitman, said she couldn't have accomplished much without the support and trust of the administrator's at Whitman High School.

"It is because of who they are and what they do that I teach in a place where individuals are encouraged and thier talents are celebrated," said Sperrazza.

Whitman Principal Kathleen Acker said Sperrazza's lasting impression on students is evident by the many graduates that remain in contact with her. Many supporters were in attendance Wednesday, including Sperrazza's former high school teacher.

Six others were named Teacher of the Year at their respected schools by the district at Wednesday's event, including: Rebbecca Medina from Oakwood Primary School; Paul Kosak from Birchwood Intermediate School; Suzzane Ciccarelli from Maplewood Intermediate School; Tracy Plattner from Silas Wood;  Karen Schmitt from Stimson Middle School; and Maria Rodriguez from Countrywood Primary School.
