South Huntington Superintendent Search Continues

Ads placed in national media, Kaden says.

The South Huntington Board of Education's search continues for the successor to Superintendent Thomas Shea, who is retiring after 14 years in the district.

"I'd hope that our next superintendent would have the same chemistry and working relation with the school board," Shea said at last week's board meeting.  "I've had a wonderful time with the district, and South Huntington still has a lot of potential, and we've come a long way."

One parent wanted community involvement in the selection of the next district head.

"From my experience, I think it'd be better to entertain and encourage comment from the community," responded board president James Kaden.  "If we formally allow input, and then say it's still our decision, we don't want the community to feel like they're not being heard.  Further, the superintendent needs a good working relationship with the board, and the position is of the utmost importance."

Board member Nicholas Ciappetta hoped the process could have a balance.

"When it gets down to a couple of finalists, I think it'd be good to get input from some of the players in the district," he said.

Kaden said that advertisements for the open position had been sent out to national media last week, and the board hopes to fill the position by April. It will collect resumes throughout February.
