Education Commissioner Visits

State Education Commissioner Dr. John B. King Jr. took questions Thursday morning from a panel at Whitman High School that ranged from classroom size to the value of mandated tests. After visiting Whitman, King headed to Birchwood and then to Huntington High School to talk with more than a dozen educators from around the area.

Sports Concussion Forum

Huntington schools are presenting a forum Monday night on sports concussions, sponsored by the district's athletic department and PTA Council. The forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Huntington High School. The session will be led by Dr. David Weissberg and Dr. Max Rudansky.

Whitman Students Chosen for All-County Music Festival

The following Walt Whitman students were named to the 2012 NYSCAME/SCMEA High School All-County Festival: Emily Di Lillo- Flute 1- All-County Band; Nikhil Bartolomeo- Bb Clarinet- All-County Orchestra; Nicholas Pinelli- Violin 2- All-County Orchestra; Jonathan Heller- Bass 1 - Mixed Chorus; Jessica Malone- Alto 2- Mixed Chorus; Olivia Marchionda- Soprano 1- Mixed Chorus;Dylan Muhlstock- Tenor 2-  Mixed Chorus; Lindsay Nyman- Soprano 2- Women’s Choir; Jessie O’Hagan- Alto 2-  Women’s Choir; Kristen Riorden- Soprano 2- Women’s Choir; Symone Stewart- Alto 1- Women’s Choir; Raquelle Viteri- Soprano 1- Women’s Choir.

Huntington Student Named National Merit Semi-Finalist

Alexis Weitzner, a Huntington High School senior, was named a National Merit semi-finalist. About 90 percent of all semi-finalists will be named finalists and 8,300 of them will win a National Merit scholarship. There is more than $32 million available for this year’s program.

Schools Closed for Yom Kippur

Public schools are closed Wednesday for Yom Kippur.

South Huntington Fundraiser

The South Huntington PTA Council has contracted with Cristoline Fund Raising. The fundraising supports council projects, including scholarships. Brochures were sent home with students in the primary schools. The sale ends Friday.

Homecoming in Huntington

A pep rally and float decoration is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at Huntington High School.  are set for scheduled for Friday. On Saturday, the parade starts at noon, downtown, followed by the game at 2 p.m. and a dance at 7 p.m.
