School Notes: Pupils to Take on the Election

Highlights from Huntington and South Huntington districts.

Third and fourth graders in the Huntington school district will be getting involved in the Nov.6 presidential election.

Huntington’s arts-in-education program is sponsoring a “Kids for President” Child’s Play writing project that will coincide with the national election.  “The students are writing stories about what they would do if they were president,” said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts.

“We are having the actors from Child’s Play Touring Theater come to the district on Nov. 1-2 to present stories written by children, including a premier performance of plays based on our own students’ writing,” Fretz said.

Volunteer Science Research Mentors Needed

Huntington High School’s science research program is looking for community residents with a scientific background to serve as volunteer mentors for research students developing projects for regional and national competitions.

Science teacher Lori Kenny, who heads the research program, has been working closely with department colleague and fellow program teacher Dame Forbes, along with district officials to offer an enhanced research experience to high school students.

As more students have made the commitment to engage in science research at the school and in local labs, the need for adult mentors has also grown.

Residents possessing a science background who are interested in mentoring a research program student can contact Mrs. Kenny (lkenny@hufsd.edu) for more information and to arrange a visit to meet with the research teachers and students. “Our intention is to match students and scientists with similar interests,” Kenny said.
