School Donates to Food Bank

Long Island School for the Gifted sends more than 1,000 pounds to LI Cares.

Food collected by students and staff at the Long Island School for the Gifted was sent off to Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank, Wednesday afternoon.

Roberta Tropper, principal of the school on Pidgeon Hill Road in Huntington Station, said the school normally collects about 850 pounds each year right after Thanksgiving. This year, she estimated, the collection, overseen by Colleen Ziegler, dean of students,  exceeds 1,000 pounds.

"The students knew that this year, more than ever, our community needed us," Tropper said. "They understand that many people are in need, and that after the hurricane, this number increased significantly."

"Our school community has much to be thankful for," Tropper said. "It is important that we think of those less fortunate than ourselves and help them in any way we can.  We are proud to partner with the Long Island Cares organization, specifically the Harry Chapin Food Bank."
