S. Huntington Parents to Get Common Core Information

Parent academies scheduled to start in January.

The South Huntington school district will present information on Common Core standards at a series of parent academies.

The program is scheduled for January and February. The district said the sessions are designed to provide resources to families in helping their children.

Sessions will begin with an overview of the changes brought about by Common Core implementation. Parents will then divide into other sessions, for grade-level specific discussions of general lesson material and resources.

Teachers and administrators will be on hand to facilitate model lessons and stimulate instruction-based discussion with parents.

The schedule:

Grades K-2: Jan. 13, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. - Countrywood Primary Center

Grades 3-5: Jan. 28, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. - Birchwood Intermediate School

Grades 6-8: Jan. 7, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. - Stimson Middle School

Grade 9: Feb. 5,  7:30 p.m. toDr. Jared  9 p.m. - Walt Whitman High School

"The goal of the Common Core Academy is to provide our parents with specific grade level resources and strategies that they can use at home to help their child/children," said Dr. Jared Bloom, supervisor of assessment and  technology/Office of Curriculum and Instruction.

The problem isn't that parents don't understand the new-fangled Common Core math. The problem is that Common Core math in nonsensical, and nonintuitive. Instead of expending time, energy and resources on "parent university," they should be reverting to time-tested ELA and math for all grades in our district!
