S. Huntington Candidate Laura Carey: Top Issue

School board candidates answer question about key district issue.

Patch asked candidates for the Huntington and South Huntington school boards to identify the most important issue facing the district.

Laura Carey, an incumbent on the South Huntington board, gave this response:

I believe the major issue that is facing our district today is how we preserve programs in our schools while staying within the tax cap.  The need to do more with limited resources becomes increasingly important as we look to meet the new Common Core expectations and provide college and career preparation for our students. We addressed this issue during our current school year and can continue to do so in the coming years by:

1)  Seeking alternative funding sources such as competitive grants to enhance student programs without added costs to the taxpayer

2)  Pursuing savings like we have through our energy efficiency grant to preserve the most resources for classroom instruction

3)  Using technology in a manner that matches the learning style of our 21st Century student.
