Remember Those Who Defend Liberty

This was written by Dr. David Bennardo, superintendent of South Huntington schools.

Veterans Day offers us an important opportunity to pause and honor the men and women who dedicated their lives to protecting the freedoms we all enjoy.

It is an inescapable reality of human existence that liberty comes at a price.

While we consider self-determination and human dignity inalienable rights, there are times when they must be defended against those who prefer tyranny over freedom.

It was in recognition of this fact that in November of 1919, President Wilson declared the 11th day of the 11th month to be one of thanks and remembrance to the veterans who sacrificed in the name of American democracy.

So tonight, as we sit with our families, wrapped in the warm blanket of freedom that is the United States, we should remember the men and women in uniform who preserve these rights we hold so dear.
