Oheka Gatsby Party Honors Local Students

Six students awarded scholorships at historic Gold Coast Mansion event Wednesday in South Huntington.

Six local high school seniors were each presented $3,000 Otto Kahn Award Scholarships at the annual Friends of Great Gatsby-themed Garden Party Wednesday in South Huntington.

The party, usually held in Oheka's famous garden, was staged inside this year due to rain — but the festive atmosphere was hardly dampened by the wet weather. Guests to the historic Gold Coast mansion showed up to the event in 1920's-style garb to enjoy the surroundings.

The scholarship program continues a historic tradition started in the 1920's by Oheka builder, Otto Kahn, an arts philanthropist who would often hold Gatsby-like parties at castle featuring famous artists and performers of the day including singer Enrico Caruso, among others.

Kahn was said to have given money to numerous artists and performers to fund their careers. In the same tradition, Melius and the Friends of Oheka and Oheka continue it today with awards programs to help local aspiring arts students.
