New South Huntington Administrator Named

Dorr to become supervisor of assessment for school district.

Maria Dorr will become supervisor of assessment and reading/language arts in the South Huntington School District.

Her appointment, which will take effect in January, was announced at Wednesday's school board meeting.

She comes to South Huntington from the Rocky Point system, where she has served as pre-K-12 coordinator of reading and compensatory services since 2007.

Some of her responsibilities included facilitating the district's pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade literacy curriculum and academic intervention services in addition to the universal pre-kindergarten and Title I services.  Prior to administration, she was a reading specialist and a reading recovery teacher for nine years. 

Dorr received a bachelor's degree in English and her master's degree in literacy from Dowling College.  In addition, Dorr earned  her Post Master's Certificate in School District Leadership at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the International Reading Associations, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Long Island Language Arts Council.

"I am privileged to have the opportunity to partner with the outstanding administration, teachers, staff, board of education and community at South Huntington," she said.

She succeeds Dr. Timothy Eagen, recently promoted to assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, one of several changes in administrative assignments in the district following the August retirement of deputy superintendent James Romanelli.
