Letter to Parents From Superintendent of Schools John Finello

The superintendent addresses the recent decision by the school board to create a sixth-grade center at the Abrams school.

Dear Parents:

At Monday night's meeting of the Huntington School Board trustees voted to create a district sixth-grade center at Jack Abrams School and to assign all fourth and fifth grade students to Woodhull School, effective September 2010.

Included in the proposed 2010-11 budget that was adopted Monday night was funding for the leasing and installation of three modular classrooms to be used at Woodhull as part of the implementation plan. If necessary, the modular rooms would be expected to arrive at Woodhull during the fall semester.

Until then, we would maximize use of the existing rooms there to deliver a program that is comparable to the one that fourth and fifth graders are receiving this year. We are confident our experienced teachers will provide a seamless transition during this period of change.

The new sixth-grade center will bring together all district students on that grade level, allowing for a smooth and educationally sound transition to J. Taylor Finley Middle School the following year.

Our sixth-grade program will be similar to the one currently in place at the two intermediate buildings.

As we move forward, please be assured that all of us in the district are committed to providing all of our students with an exceptional educational experience. We are already at work to make the 2010-2011 school year an outstanding one.

Very truly yours,
John Finello
