Former S. Huntington Admin to Become Kings Park School Superintendent

On Tuesday, the Kings Park Board of Education will appoint Dr. Timothy T. Eagen, a former South Huntington Schools administrator, as its next superintendent of schools, effective Aug. 1, 2014. 

The Board will approve the contract with Eagen during its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m.  A reception for the community to informally meet Eagen will immediately follow the appointment. All residents interested are invited to attend.

Eagen assumes the role of superintendent from Dr. Susan A. Agruso, who will be retiring from the district on July 31 after serving as its chief officer for the past six years.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Eagen to the Kings Park School District and are confident that his background in education and top-notch leadership skills will benefit our students, staff and community for many years to come,” Board President Marie Goldstein said. “Our search process drew a large number of applications from qualified candidates, and Dr. Eagen emerged as the top choice during the selection process. He is a dynamic professional and possesses a shared educational philosophy that perfectly aligns with our district’s educational goals of focusing upon the academic, social and emotional growth of all students.”

The contract between Eagen and the Board of Education is for four years, beginning on Aug. 1, 2014 and running through June 30, 2018. He will be paid an annual salary of $202,000.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to lead in a district of this caliber,” Eagen said. “From our first meeting together, I felt a natural connection with the Board and the district, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the community to build upon the school district’s history of extraordinary accomplishments and to develop plans for future enhancements.”

Eagen comes to the district with a wealth of experience, beginning with his career as a science teacher. Most recently, he served as the assistant superintendent for human resources in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, a position he held since 2012. During his time in Plainview-Old Bethpage, Eagen worked as the district’s chief information officer and was directly accountable for all operations related to the district’s 1,286 employees. He was also instrumental in working collaboratively with both the teachers’ and administrators’ associations to craft and implement the district’s APPR plan. 

Prior to his work in Plainview-Old Bethpage, Eagen climbed the administrative ladder in the South Huntington Union Free School District, where he served as the assistant superintendent for instruction and curriculum; the supervisor of assessment, math and science; and as a building assistant principal. Eagen provided leadership in the design, development and maintenance of curriculum and instruction initiatives and served as a resource during curriculum-related projects and professional workshops. He also supervised the district’s rollout of the Common Core Learning Standards, along with new data-driven instructional strategies, and researched and developed a plan for implementing an online learning option for targeted Advanced Placement courses. In addition, he was the primary author of the district’s winning NYSED Teacher Leader Effectiveness Grant totaling $747,000.

In addition to his work in the K-12 school system, Eagen has worked as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Teaching, Literacy and Leadership at Hofstra University.

In recognition of his dedication to the field of education, Eagen has been honored by numerous professional organizations and has had his work included in several publications. He was named a 2010 Educator of the Year by the New York Schools Data Analysis Technical Assistance Group and was a nominee and finalist for the ASCD Outstanding Young Educator Award in 2011 as well as a nominee in 2013. 

He is also a contributing member of several educational associations, serving as president of the Long Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and as a member of the New York State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the American Educational Research Association. In his personal time, he remains an active member of the National Eagle Scout Association.

Eagen earned his Doctor of Educational and Policy Leadership, a certificate of advanced study in educational administration and a Master of Science in secondary education with distinction from Hofstra University. Additionally, he earned his Bachelor of Science in ceramic engineering with department honors from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and was a member of the New York State Council of School Superintendents Future Superintendents’ Academy.
