Kaden, Brieff Win in South Huntington

School budget passes by a wide margin.

Voters chose Jim Kaden and Lisa Brieff to the South Huntington School Board Tuesday and voted in favor of passing the $140 million school budget for 2011-12.

Yes votes were 2,135 in favor of the school budget and 1,106 against.

Kaden, the current school board president, received 1,661 votes.

"Obviously, I'm pleased with the results, said Kaden, after his win. "I'm glad the budget passed. On to next year's budget."

Winners were announced less than 30 minutes after the polls closed at 10 p.m. at Walt Whitman High School.  A small crowd gathered in the gymnasium of the school to witness the results.

Brieff received 1,793 votes — the most of any candidate. Laci Wright received 1,339 votes and incumbent candidate Melanie Vassalo received 846 votes.

"I feel very happy and excited to hit the ground running," said Brieff. "I live in the district and am passionate about my involvement, so I'm really psyched."
