Hundreds Soar Through Lynbrook for Fly with the Owls Run [Photos]

Participants enjoyed perfect conditions for Saturday's 4-Mile run/walk.

Nearly 600 runners and walkers soared through the streets of Lynbrook Saturday morning for the annual Fly with the Owls 4-mile race, which raises funds to support programs for the Lynbrook community, particularly its youth.

The sunny but crisp weather created perfect running conditions, allowing for a fast race. Following the kids races, the participants took off from the start line on Merrick Road at 8:30 a.m. and then made their way south. The second half of the race took the runners and walkers over Merrick Road to the north side of Lynbrook, where they finished at Lynbrook North Middle School.

Peter Hawkins, 48, of Malverne, once again darted across the finish line first in his wheelchair, completing the course in 21 minutes and 9 seconds, a 5:18 pace.

Joseph Sanchez, 21, of Valley Stream, came across 37 seconds later, to earn first place among the male runners with a 5:25 pace. The first Lynbrook resident to cross the finish line was Paul Curtis, 38, who took second place among the male runners with a time of 21:45. Chris Koegel, 29, of Malverne, who came in second among the male runners at last month's Malverne Run for Education 5K, took third place, finishing in 21:55.

Among the females, Una Broderick, 46, of Wantagh, took first, running a 6:18 pace to earn an overall time of 25:12. (Broderick also was the top female finisher the Malverne 5K held on Oct. 14.) Jill Skelly, 49, of Baldwin, placed second with a time of 26:10. Karen Pompay,42, of Garden City, finished 9 seconds later to nab third.

The first Lynbrook teacher to cross the finish line was Rob Kolb, 40, of Island Park, who ran a speedy 27:06. The fastest veteran was Joe D'Agostino, 63, of Holbrook, with a time of 32:58. Click here to view the full results.
