Football: Week 5 Preview

St. Anthony's and Huntington look to stay near the top of their divisions while Harborfields and Whitman try to continue their winning ways.

Huntington (3-1) @ Deer Park (3-1) Saturday, 2 p.m.

The Huntington Blue Devils are on a three-game winning streak thanks to a confident running game and a defense that seems to be improving with each week. Calvin Bollar, James Taylor, and Trayvon Toney – Huntington's three-headed monster of running backs – combined for 278 yards and two touchdowns on just 29 carries in last weekend's 24-14 win over the Miller Place Panthers. Huntington defensive end Dante Allen has five sacks in his last two games.

Like the Blue Devils, the Deer Park Falcons' only loss came at the hands of the Sayville Golden Flashes by a score of 29-21 in Week 3. The Falcons boast an extensive running game and will use multiple backs to get the ball up the field – like in their 39-0 opening-week win over the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats where eight different players had at least two rush attempts for the Falcons. Junior quarterback Austin Sweeting has attempted just nine passes in the Falcons' three wins.

Allen will have his hands full on defense, but should be able to take care of business while Bollar & Co. lead the way on offense for the Blue Devils.

East Hampton/Bridgehampton/Pierson (2-2) @ Harborfields (1-3) Saturday, 2 p.m.

The East Hampton/Bridgehampton/Pierson Bonackers' running back of choice is senior Rob Greene. Greene has 22 carries for 98 yards and one touchdown in the Bonackers two wins. But the Harborfields Tornadoes must be wary of senior running back Steven Bahns who has made the most of his carries this season. Bahns has 10 carries for an incredible 159 yards, one reception for 89 yards and three touchdowns in the Bonackers two wins.

In his first start on defense, defensive end Ben Tunick racked up 10 tackles and a sack for the Tornadoes in their first win of the season, a 34-0 win over Shoreham-Wading River. Quarterback Sean Clark completed six passes for 136 yards and a touchdown while running back Nico Amantia had his most productive game of the season, registering 141 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Bahns' speed could prove to be Harborfields undoing unless Tunick and the Tornadoes defense can step up for a second straight week.

Walt Whitman (1-3) @ Bay Shore (2-2) Saturday, 2 p.m.

The Walt Whitman Wildcats grabbed their first win of the season last weekend in a 16-15 last-minute win over the Sachem East Flaming Arrows. Running back Darrell Felder continued his impressive season for the Wildcats with 70 yards rushing and extended his touchdown streak to four games while Xavier Livingston provided some relief for Felder out of the backfield. Livingston rushed the ball 10 times for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Despite starting off 2-2, the Bay Shore Marauders have an impressive offense that will look to open things up against a young Wildcats squad. Marauders quarterback Kevin Cox has an excellent arm and all five of his touchdown passes this season have come from at least 25 yards out. In The Marauders' two wins, senior running back Karl Allison has rushed the ball 57 times for a staggering total of 462 yards and six touchdowns.

While the combo of Felder and Livingston seem to be feeding off of one another, Cox and the incredibly fast Allison may be too much for the Wildcats to handle.

St. Joseph by the Sea (3-1) @ St. Anthony's (4-0) Saturday, 7 p.m.

The St. Joseph by the Sea Vikings upset the Chaminade Flyers in Week 3 by a score of 24-20 and senior running back Chris Murphy rushed for a career-high 227 yards and two touchdowns.  But Murphy's 227 yards were miniscule compared to junior John Diaz's effort in Week 4. After Murphy left last week's game against the St. Francis Prep Terries with a knee injury, Diaz went on to carry the team on his back. The 5'5" running back rushed for 319 yards and five touchdowns in a 46-20 win.

Another week, another win, and another impressive ground game from the St. Anthony's Friars. After five players combined for 283 rushing yards for the Friars in Week 3, six players combined for 269 rushing yards in the Friars' 43-21 Week 4 victory over the Xaverian Clippers.

Like last week, quarterback Charlie Raffa and the St. Anthony's remarkable rush should tear into the Vikings' defense.
