Whitman Science Fair

Projects for the 353 students participating in Walt Whitman High School's science fair will be on display starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, in the south cafeteria.

At 7:30 p.m., awards will be announced in the Performance Arts Center. Participating students are honors-level students from biology, chemistry and physics classes. Their projects are subject-specific to the class the student is taking.

The first round of judging narrows the field of entries, and takes place the week before the show. Three finalists are picked from each honors class. The final round of judging evaluates those entries. First, second and third place winners will be picked in each subject area -- biology, chemistry and physics -- and there will be one Best in Fair award.

All award winners projects will move on to the Long Island Science Congress in the spring, said Warren Cohen, science department chairperson.

The Long Island Science Congress is an adjudicated exhibit of science projects by students in Nassau and Suffolk counties. It is sponsored by the Long Island sections of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. The senior division judging is scheduled for April 6, 2011.
