District Says Software Use Complies With Law

System is used to register voters, not skew vote, Huntington district says.

Several Long Island school districts, including Huntington, have bought software that can influence voter turnout, according to Newsday.

The Bold Systems LLC software, Newsday said, is marketed as a way of helping districts get out the vote from what the software company says is "key voting blocs...such as PTA members, families with kids in athletics..."

But the Huntington district said it had not used the software in that fashion.

"The district has utilized the system appropriately to register voters prior to the vote/election and to maintain a poll list as required by law. At no time has the district used the system to engage in any form of partisan activity, such as making calls to targeted groups or otherwise. The Huntington School District has always conducted and will continue to conduct its vote and elections in complete compliance with state procedures and policies," the Huntington school district said Monday.

Newsday said any attempt by public organizations to selectively influence voter turnout is illegal.
