Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

April 22, 1970 began the celebration of Earth Day in the United States.  Here are some ways to commemorate the day:

1. Plant trees! Earth Day is close to U.S. Arbor Day (April 26), and over time Earth Day has taken on the role of tree-planting. Planting trees helps decreases greenhouse gas emissions, cleans pollution, locks soil in place to prevent erosion, and provides homes for a lot of biodiversity. Just one mature tree can produce up to 260 pounds (118 kg) of oxygen and remove harmful ozone pollutants from the lower atmosphere.

2. Learn more about the environment
! Earth Day is a wonderful time to learn more about the environment and how you can help to protect it. Learn more about issues such as pollution, endangered species , water shortages, recycling, and climate change.  The internet and library has tons of information! A few excellent sites are www.350.org, www.sierraclub.com.

3. Clean up litter
! It can be as simple as walking your street and picking up litter. Create a group or gather a bunch of friends and start a community project. Clean up a local beach, such as this event. Another great event is http://www.greenfestivals.org/nyc.

4. Buy or make Earth-friendly products.  Try making up a simple vinegar-and-water counter cleaner, or swapping out your cleaner for a less-toxic orange-based one.  Whole Foods has an excellent selection of home products. When treating your lawn, use Rain Rich Environmentally Safe fertigation

5. Ride your bike
! Get some fresh air, exercise and use your bicycle to commute to work or school and to run errands.
There are many events you can attend in honor of Earth Day on Long Island. Please visit this site click here where there is something for everyone in the family!
