Mosquitos Increase Due To Hurricane Sandy

In a recent article, Mosquito Squad owner Ed Rhoades says it's going to be a severe tick and mosquito season due to the effects of Superstorm Sandy.  In addition, the rain in May and June has helped to speed up the multiplying of mosquitoes.  Besides their annoying buzz, painful bites, and itchy bumps mosquitoes carry diseases including West Nile virus. Here are several steps you can do to limit your exposure and keep the mosquito population to a minimum:

1. Call Rain Rich Sprinklers to schedule an estimate for our system that allows organic and natural products to filter through into your sprinkler system. We insert Cedar Oil or Rosemary Oil into your system which sprays a small amount through one special zone to repel mosquitos. Select a zone closest to a sitting area.

2. Remove any standing water.  Mosquitos can lay their eggs and have hatch in less than a ¼” of water. Eggs can hatch within days (even hours). Remove standing water in gutters, old tires, plastic, garbage cans, recycle cans, outdoor furniture, bird baths, static ponds and areas of poor drainage. Anything that holds non-moving water is a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes.

3. If you own a pond, consider adding a waterfall or fountain to prevent the water from becoming stagnant.

4. If you must go out, cover up your arms, legs, neck, and head.

5. Use natural repellants that contain ingredients such as rosemary, cedar, or lemon grass oil in a stray bottle. Test to be sure that you do not have an allergic reaction by putting on a small area of your skin. You can also put the repellant on your clothes.

6. Mosquitos can bite dogs and cats.  Protect them with these natural oils by placing a few drops on their back between their shoulder blades, again test a small area.

7. Make sure your screen doors and windows are secured.

8. Stay indoors in the early morning and at dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

9. Plant herbs such as rosemary, basil, lavender, lemon balm, and lemongrass  which are also effective mosquito repellents.

10. Change water in bird baths at least two times per week.
