Wind Damages Whitman High School

Roof of Whitman High School, a Suffolk evacuation center, damaged by high winds Monday evening.

Several chunks of Whitman High School's roof blew off Monday night as Hurricane Sandy brought high winds and rain to the area.

The school's north gym, a separate building, is serving as a Suffolk County Red Cross shelter. It is undamaged.

A volunteer said that there were only about 10 people using the gym as of about 5:30 p.m.

Dr. David Bennardo, the South Huntington schools superintendent, had announced Monday afternoon that the district would cancel classes Tuesday because of concern about the weather.
