West Nile: Is There a Home Remedy?

What over-the-counter product do you use to keep mosquitoes off the kids and yourself; is there a secret family potion you'll share?

has hit the news and sent some shivers around Long Island.

Thursday, the Suffolk County Health Department said a Town of Huntington resident was recovering from a case of West Nile. It was the second case in the county this year.

On Wednesday, the said cases nationally are rising dramatically.

For the time being, we could use a little help: What home remedies and over-the-counter products would you recommend to our readers to keep the bugs from biting?

Is there one that has been effective for you and your family?

Is there a home remedy, something that has worked for your family for generations?

Please tell us your ideas and offer some recommendations in the comments. Lots of people are asking what to do.

I've used food grade hydrogen peroxide as a home remedy to fight West Nile. I was diagnosed with West Nile last week in Pima County, Arizona. That makes me one of the first reported cases in the county for 2012. Both myself and my wife tested positive at the same time for West Nile. She had a pretty mild case. I ran a high fever, vomited, and developed a stiff neck and muscle soreness. After day three, when my muscles began to tense up from head to toe, I began to read up on possible causes. On day four I started taking Hydrogen Peroxide. With H2O2, typically you ramp up slowly to 25 drops in a glass of water three times a day. But because I'd done H2O2 cleanses before, and I didn't want to waste time, I jumped in at 12 drops in the morning and went to 25 drops in a glass by that afternoon. My symptoms stopped dead in their tracks within 24 hours. Of course, that could simply have been because, the thing had already run its course. I stuck with my H2O2 program three times a day for three days, then dropped to once a day, and then stopped after a week. During this time I saw my doctor and got tested. But I showed up in his office without symptoms. Here are some links to programs and procedures for taking H2O2. Here's a for-profit health product site with a summary on how to take H2O2: http://www.frequencyrising.com/hydrogen_peroxide.htm . Also, here's a link to some H2O2 academic research: http://www.nature.com/nm/journal/v18/n6/full/nm.2763.html
