Put Down the Keys; Step Away from the Car

Town of Huntington joins two efforts to get people out from behind the wheel.

Let someone else do the driving.

That's the suggestion behind 511NY Rideshare’s 2013 Carpool Challenge, which Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone is suggesting for town employees. The program says that employees who agree to complete at least four round trips in a calendar month before Nov. 30. They have to get to and from work by means other than driving themselves alone.

The Town Board agreed in August to make the Town an official participant in the challenge.

Alternatively, Petrone is asking the  general public to think about Car Free  Day Long Island. The  town,  through its HART Bus System, is a co-sponsor.

Car Free Day is set for Sept. 20 and is an international event during which people are encouraged to use alternate modes of transportation for one day.

People can pledge to participate by filling out a  form at the Car Free Day LI website, www.carfreedayli.com. Those who pledge to be car-free or car-light will automatically be entered for a chance to win prizes. People wanting more information about 511NYRideshare’s programs can visit their website,
