Stiffer Fines Sought For ATV Offenders

Public hearing set for Aug. 2 to discuss proposal to amend town recreational vehicle use law.

After receiving numerous complaints regarding illegal recreational vehicle use in town parks, the Huntington Town Board is considering a resolution to enforce stiffer penalties against offenders.

Seeking to protect the safety and welfare of the public from adverse effects of recreational vehicle use, the proposed ammendment to Section 1 Chapter 193 of the village code would make illegal recreational vehicle use a misdemeanor, punishable by fines up to $15,000 for repeat offenses. First offenders would be subject to fines between $100 and $500, or 10 days in jail.

Currently, violation of the code is not a misdeamenor, with maximum fines of $1000 or 20 days in jail for repeat offenders.

A 7 p.m. public hearing has been set for Aug. 2 at village hall to discuss the issue.
