Street Renamed for Soldier

A street in Greenlawn has been renamed for Sgt. Anthony Mangano, who was killed while serving in Afghanistan three years ago.

Mangano grew up in Smithtown. He  joined the National Guard in 1991 and served until 1994. Later he worked in construction and as a police officer in upstate Cairo  before moving to the house at the corner of Irving Place and Sinclair Drive, Greenlawn, with his mother, Constance.

In 2007, Mangano re-enlisted for three years. On June 21, 2008, he was part of a convoy of six trucks in Kandahar when it was attacked and Mangano was killed.

The Town Board approved the street renaming last September, but waited to hold the ceremony on the anniversary of his death.
