Town Notebook: Officer Honored, New Law Helps Local Business

Keith Tetrault honored for heroism at recent Town Board meeting.

The Huntington Town Board on Monday recognized a public safety officer for an act of heroism. 

In a proclamation presented at a Feb. 6 Ton Board meeting at , Keith Tetrault wa honored for high standards of service and dedication and acting "without regard for his own personal safety to help an injured person." 

After being notified that a victim had fallen onto the tracks at the Huntington Station LIRR station, Tetrault radioed for help, then entered the track bed to administer first aid to the unconscious victim who had suffered contusions and abrasions, according to the town.

Tetrault's actions allowed power to be shut off to the tracks and the victim to later be transported to safety by emergency responders. 

 Also at the meeting, a new local law was passed to grant businesses located within the Town of Huntington a 5 percent margin when submitting proposals against out-of-town companies.

The intent of the newly law is to keep business and tax dollars within the local economy when practical, according to Town Board member Mark Cuthbertson, who spearheaded the legislation.

“The Local Preference Law will help give local businesses an edge over companies located outside of the town’s borders when seeking work and contracting to provide professional services to the Town," said Cuthbertson, in a release.

  • Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone met this week at Town Hall with Huntington School Superintendent James Polansky, school board president Emily Rogan and Cuthbertson for a discussion about community concerns and issues. The meeting, called by Cuthbertson, was a first step in what will be a continued dialogue with the county, town and school district reagring Huntington Station concerns, according to Cuthbertson.
  • The Town Board honored the Long Island School for the Gifted’s ninth grade knowledge master team at Monday's meeting for its first-place performance in the junior high division of the 2011 New York State Knowledge Master Open.
