Sunquam Library Renamed After Community Activist

The Sunquam Elementary School library was renamed after long-time community activist Alissa Sue Taff, whose coordinated efforts led to the reopening of the school.

Taff, a past member and president of the Half Hollow Hills Central School District and current president of the Civic Association of Sweet Hollow, Inc., worked diligently with the Town of Huntington on many initiatives, including drainage improvements on Round Swamp Road, the historic preservation of Oheka Castle and was instrumental in the re-opening of Sunquam Elementary School.

"It is a pleasure to congratulate my friend Alissa Sue Taff for this incredible honor," commented Councilwoman Susan Berland, onhand for the event. "Alissa is a very well-respected and dedicated member of our town who has worked tirelessly on a number of issues and who was truly instrumental in the re-opening of Sunquam Elementary School. Alissa is the epitome of a community leader and I commend her for all that she has done for our community."

St. Elizabeth's CYO Soccer Festival Benefit

More than $5,000 was raised June 25 at the St. Elizabeth's CYO Soccer festival benefitting Danny Alini, a little boy with leukemia. The event at the Half Hollow Hills and Birchwood School fields with featured tournament raffles, T-shirts and donations. Councilman Mark mayoka attended the event.

Berland Recognizes Young Leaders

Councilwoman Susan Berland presented certificates of appreciation to 30 members of the Young Leaders Program July 5 for their dedication to community service.

The Young Leaders Program is an organization whose objective is to provide young people with a resource program to help strengthen them as individuals and make a difference in their community.

"It was my pleasure to honor the participants of the Young Leaders Program", commented Berland. "It is very inspiring to see young people dedicated to community service and to making a difference in their neighborhoods.  I commend these students and wish them the best in their future endeavors."
