Huntington Notebook: Vote Divided on Approved Contract

Councilman Eugene Cook rejects one-year consulting services agreement which passes 3-1-1.

A one-year contract agreement between the Town of Huntington and Laurie C. Nolan of Northport for consulting services was met with less than unanimous support by the Huntington Town Board this month.

The $30,000 contract, approved by a 3-1-1 vote, will allow Nolan to provide to the town and Supervisor Frank Petrone consultation on renegotiation of a service and lease aggreement with Covanta Huntington regarding a Long Island Power Authority tax certiori proceeding. 

Covanta, a solid waste facility which generates renewable energy that is sold to LIPA, is used as an alternative to landfils, which are prohibited.

Town Councilman Eugene Cook voted no to the resolution. Councilman Mark Mayoka abstained from the Town Hall vote Feb. 7.

Additionally, the Town Board denied the issuance of a certificate of approval to Seamus Coyle to erect a 3-bay service station with unfinished second-story floor for storage at 114 Prime Ave. in Huntington.

Also at the meeting, the Town Board:

  • Authorized the execution of an agreement with the Suffolk County Youth Bureau for the Communities And Schools Together Program.
  • Authorized the applcation and receivement of funding from Suffolk County for the provision of adult day care services.
  • Authorized the application and receivement of from Suffolk County for the residential repair program for the elderly of Huntington.
  • Authorized the execution of a contract to furnish and install asphalt concrete with Polillico Civil, Inc. Town Board memeber Mark Cuthertson abstained from the vote which passed 4-1.
  • Authorized the execution of a contract for the townwide requirements contratct for road rehibiliation with Kings Park Industries.
  • Authorized the execution of a one-year contract for light truck and heavy duty manual transmission and rear differential rebuild and repair with Drive Train Truck Part, Inc. of Holtsville. Contract amount unspecified.
  • Authorized the execution of requiremet contracts for bus services for various recreation programs wit Bauman & Sons Buses, Inc. Coastal Charter Service Corp. of Ronkonkoma and Long Island Limosine Service of Hauppauge.
  • Authorized the execution of a $20,000 contract with Toshiba Business Solutions of Ronkonkoma for a 36-month lease and maintenance agreement for copy machine equipment for the highway department. New payments of the elase will decrease the monthly payment by more than $200 per month, according to the town.
  • Authorized a one-year extension of the license agreement for residential occupation of the historic Ezra Carll Homestead by a resident caretaker, Dominic Drwal of Smithtown, at a cost of $1,350 monthly. 
  • Authorized the execution of a requirements contract for sewer repairs for the Huntington Sewer District with National Water Main Cleaning of Newark, N.J.
  • Authorized a $6,000 agreement on behalf of the Department of Human Services with Family Service League Homeshare Long Island to offer assitance on affordable housing options from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1, 2012.
  • Authorized a $657,807 agreement with Suffolk County Department of Health Services for the provision of drug treatment and prevention services for town residents through the Huntington Youth Bureau's drug and alcohol program.
  • Authorized a resolution to execute a $23,900 agreement with Greenman-Pederson, Inc., of Babylon, for design services regarding traffic calming plans for Round Swamp Road.
  • Authorized a two-year license agreement with Open Space Institute on behalf of Long Island Community Agriculture Network in connection with the Community Garden at Gateway Park and the Clifford Soergel Outreach Garden at the Rupert M. Kubecka Organic Garden.
  • Authorized a five-year inter-municipal agreement with the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife for vegetative maintenance for the preservation of the Town of Huntington Sallie Ruppert Waterbird Park Preserve.
  • Authorized the establishment of a $200 fee for the Huntington Youth Music Program for orchestra, band and chorus for youth, grades 5 through 8.
  • Authorized the comptroller to appropriate no more than $3,000 from the Environmental Open Space and Park Improvement Fund for a topography survey for design of a memorial plaza at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building with handicapped aceesibilty and rampage. The town plans to improve the plaza with landscaping and new wall work.
  • Authorized a $15,000 settlement of a claim (Goldberg vs Town of Huntington) to recover damages sustained in an accident in 2007.
  • Reappointed Denise Harrington, Dr. David Tonjes and Richard Meyer to the Conservation Board.
  • Reappointed Cheryl Grossman, Maria Teresa Quirk and Judy Gorenstein to the Affordable Housing Advisory Board.
  • Urged the Suffolk County Legislature to appropriate assessment stabilization resreve funds for use by the Village of Northport to undertake capital improvements to the village waste water collection and treatment system, as mandated by the U.S. Department of Environmental Conservation.
  • Approved the issuance of a certificate of approval in a historic district regarding 117 West Shore Rd. in Huntington, the Daniel Smith House.
  • Scheduled a public hearing March 31 at 7 p.m. to consider awarding a franchise agreement to conduct a kayaking program for the Town of Huntington Department of Parks and Recreation.

Town Hall will be closed Feb. 20 in observance of President's Day. All scheduled pick up has been moved back one day due to the holiday. Bottles and cans recycling will be picked up in all areas on Thursday. Yardwaste will be collected during the week of Feb. 27.
